MOAR GRILLE GOOD
The refreshed 2020 BMW 7 Series debuted and like the pictures we saw last week, it gains the X7 style grille.
The look has grown on me
slightly
, but there’s no way I would take this over the new A8 or a classy S-Class.
Funny thing is my cousin is in the market for a new luxury car or suv and texted me saying how much he liked this refresh. Sigh...
What’s your favorite flagship luxury sedan?
Is Carplay still extra lol
Nice Passat, bro.

Another day, another new grill design to loathe.

S-Class rules the roost in this segment. As usual.
HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles

Yep. Maybe more grille will help. Probably not.

The Audi is nice, and I don’t hate the 7er grille that much, but if I was shopping in this segment, my only decision would be between an S550 and an S63.

Counterpoint:
I’ll take this one, with the pictured rims too.

Exactly how I feel. I was impressed with the new A8 when we checked it out, but the S still seems like the one to have.

I suspect MB isn’t freaking out.
W222 is also in its 6th model year and still looking relatively fresh.

Besides that, I always felt that cars in this class should last a long time (even though most of them are probably leased), and there’s no way in hell I would trust the BMW for 5-7 years, and don’t really trust the Audi for that long a period either.
Sure, the M-B won’t be cheap out of warranty, but I trust it more than the other two.

There are not many new cars that I do like. However Bentley Mulsanne is one of the rare ones that I’m interested in . Toyota Century is also one despite the awesome V12 went away when the car was updated.
Naturally I can’t afford a new Mulsanne/ Century or any other new thing that would be even mildly interesting. But I do like many old cars . And some these I can even afford. I have actually been checking out ads for a M-B W126 models .

Is Model S P100D the wrong answer?

I wouldn’t rank it on the level of luxury these sedans offer, but it is in the same price bracket. Man that’s still a good looking car after all these years.

Funny enough my other cousin has a W126 that he is restoring. I always loved them especially compared to the junk American manufacturers were making during the same time period.

Those wheels are amazing.

The Model S has been eating their lunch since it came out for a reason. It doesn’t have the luxury of the S Class but it makes up for it in other ways. And I’d argue the silence and Autopilot make for a pretty relaxing driving experience that the others can’t match, so it’s pretty luxurious in that way.
Also 0-60 in the mid 2 second range is nice.

I like I like it in lighter colors
But still not feeling the wheels. Won’t be a deal breaker if I were in a position to buy one though.

the amount of tech in these cars will make them nightmares to own past warranty. Germans were never known for the tech bits being reliable even when the cars were simple. I can’t imagine the amount of things that will go wrong with these things as they age.
If given the choice between a W126 S class or a brand new one with the caveat I have to keep it ten years with the costs of ownership my responsibility , the choice is a no brainer...W126.

These are indeed nice cars. Despite being quite expensive car it sold very well and spent long time in production. So luckily quite a lot of these still remain. I’m tempted to find myself a 280SE as those have often a manual transmission.
What’s your cousin’ s model?

Right - but I was responding like I was someone who could afford one of these brand new ( spoiler alert- I’m not one of those). Those people can afford repair costs with spare pocket change. Besides, you can extend the new car warranty a free extra years, and I think that’s a pretty common add on for buyers ( as opposed to lessees).

I believe it’s a 79 300SD. I haven’t seen it personally get, but it runs and drives. Needs a bunch of little stuff.

still, I’d take the W126. Warranties will not approach the needs of one of these things. Because warranty companies do not cover anything that WILL break...which is probably around 5000 things not directly power train related on these tech bloated cars . P eople with money despise inconvenience (spoiler alert:I know that from the receiving end!) So less worrying about the car the better.
I can buy radios that keep up with entertainment and convenience needs . Anything more is a distraction. And I imagine the W126 would still fair favorably in crash tests. Plus, that era MB has a very diplomatic feel.
Double plus...analog. Zombie apocalypse worthy.

That front end is both super boring, and ugly at the same time.
